Setting up some scenes in Maya to better inform the enyos and get the angles to relate to the works as a whole. This is when I wish I could print out renders as large as the drawings - for now it's a system of taping 8.5x11 sheets together and holding them over a lamp to pencil them in. 14x17 ink on vellum.

It worked! I have to say - the golden enyo really is captivating. If I stare at it long enough I start to feel a little guilty, maybe - a better phrase could be - self-conscious. The shape of an enyo is powerful enough, then to plate it with gold is just going too far.

A huge thanks goes to Jessica Williams at Brushstrokes Studio, Inc. and Rae Dunn at 4th and Clay for graciously offering space in their kilns for this project!

Now I will complete the edition with 20 more golden enyos. Pricey, and absolutely necessary.

Enyos Red

These are fresh out of the kiln today. Made from hand built clay, filled with vibrant red glaze and finished with a thin layer of clear glaze on the bottom, each is printed with my initials and an enyo drawing.

Here we are in Montmartre:

American Craft has an interesting article about the new arts and crafts movement and an exhibition going on at RISD. I can really identify with art and crafters who use high and low technologies in their processes. I can also see this show as the last straw - it's all over now (baby blue). Okay - if I really thought that, this would be a much longer post.

So, while I don't have new work to show, I have been spreading a lot of gesso lately - as have my students, prepping to make big works. I love working in tandem with them. Check back tomorrow, though - some {things} are coming out of the kiln.

How To Keep It Simple / Conceptual Graphics

I've been making some slightly sharper-edged enyos. They are a little bit in reaction to years spent complicating the simple geometric shapes that make up an enyo, and in 3D space no less, for no good reason. I think I was trying to closely simulate wool or clay - which might be a worthwhile pursuit if it were required for a CG film, but this is where the divide between creative industry and fine art begins.

So it could be that I'm finally thinking clearly about what computers (as tools) are good for. And because I have always placed so much importance on materials and accountability in medium - I should not have had this problem. Or maybe I still have this problem.

More specifically: what sort of material is 3D space? What can it do that is specific only to this medium?

Other than these, I worked at a large painting today. It's hanging from elephant clips on the wall to dry because I have no space. These are simple times.

So Day 19 has wrapped with 2 extra shows added at the end to make us feel extra special. I can now look back at all my notes taken along the way and feel like a total idiot. As always - everything I thought going in, during production, on opening night, and mid-run, was all totally off and dumb and scared and well, I always learn more than I bargain for with any show (this one especially). I cannot wait to do it again (but better next time).

Here are some sketchbook highlights (copied exactly as written):
1. evolving monster - what's w/the busted tentacle? OG why is it breaking.
2. legs and arms are falling off. works?
3. had a dream "I have a child w/o a head" while holding wrist/pulse "your heart rate stayed the same for that. Interesting."
4. Many, many lights that either work or don't. The Eye.
5. Unplugging, plugging, unplugging.
6. Allison mentions violence against circuitry.
7. theremins.

I've been working on priories in Maya. Toiling. I will never, ever get the shader right. Does it look like felt yet? No, and of course, as is the case in most 3D work, the real thing would photograph better.

I seriously spent all of yesterday adding layers and layers of detail, rendering, opening them up, and just scrolling around and staring at them. I think I'll go back to MEL scripting the felt surface, though. Not even this layered shader can possibly match up to thousands of tiny little wooly splines.

The Bay has a thick wet blanket of cloud cover today, which has calmed us all down and made us float one centimeter above the floor.

It is quite nice.

31 middle-schoolers completely chilled, carving into linoleum plates, with sharp objects, and humming quietly.

I'm making some sketch paintings to sell as prints. If anyone sees something they'd like to see as a print, call it out. It could be framed and matted in your bathroom someday. *

p.s. A good friend and fellow OSA teacher Tom Wiehl went to this show this weekend: James Gobel at Heather Marx. James is a teacher at California College of the Arts and works with cut felt and yarn (in a big way).

Here are some shots from Day 19 (what do you know, it's the part I made). Here, the Light Monster attacks the Dweller who retaliates fiercely.

A couple years ago, my friend George Weistroffer helped me build the parts that light up the Monstrosity. George, look what happened - it eats people. I'll have to wait until the show wraps to share more, but much as I've heard of past Scrap and Salvage performances, Day 19 turns out to be pure magic. There are two more weekends to see it - hurry, hurry.

-- Small trembling thing that you hold in your hand: I'm putting a show together with Scrap and Salvage. We've got a transitional space down by the Transamerica Pyramid - perfect for some exposed wiring/skin light color/little sensor eyes/almost, but, not, quite, touching, work. Yesterday, I showed the team my little glowing lights. Oooooh. Interestingly, this process seems to be harder each time.
